The driver’s story

Jonny McIlwaine got into driving through temping

TEMPING proved to be a life-saver for lorry driver Jonny McIlwaine after he kept getting turned down by firms because he is just 22 years old.

“I’d moved from Northern Ireland last September and must have made around 30 calls and applications for jobs,” he said.

“I got nowhere despite having my HGV 2 and HGV 1 licences.”

Jonny had passed the required driving tests before arriving in Rochdale ready to find a job and launch his new career as a driver.

But, despite spending weeks scouring the papers and answering adverts left, right and centre, he was getting nowhere.

“There were hundreds of jobs, many of them through agencies, but I just couldn’t get my foot in the door.”

When Jonny spotted a temp job through Adecco ( he was wary.

“I always thought temp jobs were just a day here or there but that’s not the case. Granted you have to be prepared to be flexible but I’ve worked almost full-time for a haulage firm (CFT  Services) since before Christmas.

“I drive all over the country, although I always like to be home at the end of the day.”

The temp contract has allowed him to prove himself, says Jonny.

“Thanks to Adecco I’ve now got the experience I need to apply to other companies as and when I have to look for other work. They have looked after me brilliantly. I even get paid holiday leave which I build up every week that I work.”

The job itself is just what Jonny, who grew up driving tractors on his family farm in Northern Ireland, hoped it would be.

“I love it that no two days are the same. I transport anything that can be moved on a pallet – from soft drinks to food. I have a crane in the truck to load and unload.”

As for being on his own for hours at a time, Jonny loves that too.

“I have the radio to keep me company,” he said.
