Pound Notes with Melanie Wright

£BRITONS are spending an average of £900 a year going to weddings. A typical wedding guest spends £111 on travel and accommodation, £106 on clothes, £81 on wedding gifts, £63 at the reception and £91 on the night of the stag or hen do. That adds up to £452 and, with the average person going to two weddings a year, the annual cost comes to £904.

£THE value of money has fallen by 94 per cent over the past 50 years, according to research from BM Savings using Office for National Statistics data. An 18-fold increase in retail prices means that someone today would need £1,796 to have the equivalent purchasing power of £100 in 1960. And £5.57 in 1960 would provide the same spending power as £100 today.

£FROM next year the average student will have to find £48,503 over the course of a three-year degree, according to student accommodation service homesforstudents.co.uk – an increase of 55 per cent. But the site claims students can save money by renting privately rather than using university accommodation at most universities in England.

£MORE than half of British adults don’t have a will, according to research by Standard Life. Nearly two-thirds of 35- to 44-year-olds don’t have a will in place, two-fifths of 45- to 54-year-olds, a third of 55- to 64-year-olds and – surprisingly – more than a fifth of over-65s are without a will.

£MEN are more traumatised by the loss of a pet than women , research by More Than pet insurance has found. More than 10 per cent of men take a week or more off work if their pet is lost or stolen compared with five per cent of women, while 20 per cent of men will spend up to £1,000 for the safe return of a pet. Six per cent of men have even cancelled social celebrations such as birthdays and weddings.
