Picking a naive tourist’s pockets is small fry compared to some rip-offs that have been heard of nowadays. So here are 5 travel scams to avoid in some of the most popular travel destinations in the world.
Orlando, USA

Unfortunately hotels around Disney World are not protected against identity theft, and some scammers deviously capitalized on tourists’ craving for pizza. Pizza menu were slipped under doors, guests would call and order, but their credit card numbers were not used to pay for pizza, but for identity theft. Of course, this kind of scam can happen anywhere, because scammers can rely on the fact that tourists (and often, locals too) don’t know that much about local businesses.

Travel: Head to Nashville for a welcome with a real old southern twang

It’s mid-morning in downtown Nashville and two of us are peering at a map when a big old Chevrolet pulls up at the kerb.

“Hey there sir, good mornin’ ma’am,” says the driver. “Are you lost? Can we help you?”
imageThe voice comes from a twinklyeyed grandpa with his smiling wife sitting alongside. Who are they? What do they want? Is this a scam?

Shame on me for the thought. No indeed. This is Nashville, Tennessee. It calls itself the friendliest city in the USA and we’ve just had a demonstration… two senior citizens pulling over in their car to help a pair of meandering strangers.

You get southern warmth in its purest form here. Not just “have a nice day” but helpfulness and hospitality on an epic scale.

Nashville also calls itself Music City USA and as a tourist it helps a lot if you like country music.

Note the name, by the way. There’s country and there’s western swing but there’s no such thing as “country and western”. So don’t show yourself up by calling it that at the Country Music Hall of Fame, the largest popular music museum in the world.

Bryan’s Ground: an Edwardian idyll

The planting at Bryan’s Ground in Herefordshire, home to the garden quarterly Hortus, reflects its two creators’ passion for the Arts & Crafts period.

There is little sign of the 21st century at Bryan’s Ground, where names such as loggia and skating pool are still in usage, and visitors arriving by car are directed to ‘Parking for Motors’. No, the era conjured up in David Wheeler and Simon Dorrell’s Herefordshire garden is Edwardian, the period of Lutyens and Jekyll, sleepy vernacular architecture, abundant topiary and colour-schemed washes of flowers. ‘The Arts & Crafts period. We love it,’ Dorrell says.

The Edwardian era also pervades the civilised gardening quarterly Hortus that the couple publish here together, which eschews glossy paper and colour photographs.
